territorio falisco. I Romani, inseguendo la ritirata degli Etruschi sconfitti a Veio,
attraversarono per la prima volta l’impenetrabile Selva Cimina e aprirono il pas-
saggio della Via Cassia Veientana conquistando la città. In età feudale, Sutri fu
al centro di aspri scontri tra guelfi e ghibellini, che culminarono nell'incendio del
borgo nel 1433 ad opera di Niccolò Fortebraccio. Tale evento, aggiunto allo spo-
stamento delle rotte commerciali sulla Via Cassia Cimina, ne determinarono un
rapido declino demografico ed economico. Il pregio del patrimonio archeologico,
paesaggistico e naturalistico ha portato alla creazione del Parco dell'Antichissima
Città di Sutri dove si ammira una vasta necropoli etrusca con tombe che vanno
dal VI al IV secolo a.C.

Age-old and Gate of Etruria - those attributes recalls the ancient origins of Sutri. It is a charming
village built on an impregnable outcrop of tuff rock, in between the volcanic slopes of the Sabatini
and Cimini hills. This thriving Etruscan centre owed its relevance to its strategic position for the
control of the commerce on the border between the Etruscan city (lucumonia) Tarquinia and the
Faliscan territories. While chasing the Etruscans retreat after their defeat in Veio, the Romans cros-
sed for the very first time the impenetrable Cimina forest and opened the access through the Via
Cassia conquering the city. In the feudal age the city was at the heart of fierce clashes between
Guelphs and Ghibellines, culminating in the fire of the town in 1433 by Niccolò Fortebraccio. This
event, in conjunction with the redirection of the trade routes along the Via Cimina, caused a rapid
decline of its demographic and economic relevance. The value of the archaeological and natural
heritage led the creation of the Park Age-old City of Sutri where one can admire a vast Etruscan
necropolis with tombs ranging from the sixth to the fourth century BC.
